hoboのものづくりにおける基本理念である"こだわり"を紹介してゆく『PHILOSOPHY』。今回は、様々なフィールドで活躍する実用性の高い帆布にフォーカスした。
The PHILOSOPHY series provides an inside look at how the materials used in hobo products are manufactured. This feature focuses on the production canvas, a material which is valued for its versatility and used in many fields.
今季使用している6号帆布には、4本の単糸を１本の糸に合わせる行程から始まる。帆布の厚みによって合わせる糸の本数が変わる。
The canvas being use in this season's products is canvas no.6. The first SCENE is gathering 4 threads to produce a single yarn. The number of threads used to product the yarn determines how thick the canvas will be.
合糸後、糸の強度を高める為に撚りをかける作業。この機械は休む暇もなく24時間稼働している。工場内はモーター音だけが響きわたる。
The next SCENE is the strengthening of the yarns. This machine operates 24 hours a day twisting yarn to make it stronger and more durable. This noise it produces is the only sound that can be heard in the factory.
こうして撚りあがった糸が完成した。
The strengthened yarns are then rolled.
約150本の糸を大きなドラムへ巻き直す。この作業は生地のたて糸を織機へ流し込みやすくするための作業。
Here 150 rolls of strengthened yarn are rolled around one large drum. This makes it easier for inserting the yarn into the weaving machine.
ビームという機材がひっそりと立ち並ぶ。先ほどドラムに巻き上げた糸を、さらに糸をきれいに揃える為にビームに巻き直す。
Quietly in the corner stands the 'beam'. The yarn is wound from the drum onto the beam for alignment for the next stage.
職人の手により数十本単位ずつの糸束を先ほどのビームに解けぬよう力強く縛りつける。時間をかけ丁寧に巻き上げる事が上質な帆布を生み出す。
The beam has teeth which separate the yarn into bundles. Here factory workers tie each bundle in place.
こうして巻き上がった糸は織機へセッティングされる。糸を織るよりも行程よりも、神経を使い、手間隙がかかる作業。
The rolls of bundled yarn are set in place ready to be inserted into the loom. The preparation required to get to this stage is more time consuming and more laborious than the actual weaving itself.
蛍光灯の光が工場内を眩しく遠くまで照らし出す。創業以来、使い続けている年代モノの織機が１列に立ち並ぶ。
Fluorescent lights illuminate the factory. The weaving machines have stood aligned in these rows since the factory was established.
ビームに巻いた経糸を手作業で1本ずつドロッパー、ヘルド、筬に通す。正確な作業のひとつひとつに、長年の経験で培われた職人の確かな技が光る。
Here each thread of yarn is set in place by hand. This is and meticulous work that can only be carried out by a specialist with years of experience.
力強く稼働する織機からは、綿ぼこりが雪のように降り積もる。
Here is the loom in operation. Cotton dust gathers, looking like snow.
1日８時間の稼働で50m〜70mほどの生地を織り上げる。
Operating for 8 hours each day, the loom weaves between 50-70 metres of canvas.
織り上がった生地の品質を確かめる。
Here the canvas quality is checked, and inspected for faults and imperfections.
強度に優れ、使いこむほどに風合いの増す6号キャンバスの完成。用途として、キャンバスバッグ以外にも、トラック用の幌、軍手、体操用マットなどの産業資材としても使われている万能素材だ。
The No.6 Canvas is complete. This versatile material is utilized in the production of various industrial and recreational goods such as canvas bags, truck canopies, gloves, or gym mats.
