no.001: ガラスとビーズ
／ Glass & Beads

hoboのものづくりにおける基本理念である"こだわり"を紹介してゆく『PHILOSOPHY』。第１回目は今期コレクションアイテムの装飾に使用されているビーズにスポットを当て、広島のビーズ工場を訪ねた。

In this section "Philosophy" we will be introducing, what we consider the most important aspect of our production, quality craftsmanship. For our first special we bring you a photo documentary of the glass beads manufacturing factory that handcrafts the beads we use in our latest collection.

STEP1 : 素材 / Material

貯蔵庫に収容された樽の中にはビーズの原料として使われるガラスチューブが、色や形状の種類ごとに区分されている。今や10,000種類以上あるビーズはこのガラスチューブと、他の薬品との調合から始まる。

Different types of raw material are kept separated in these barrels. The materials will be compounded later to create a variety of colored beads. This factory has a repertoire of over 10,000 different bead types.

STEP2 : 溶解 / Solution

マグマが湧き出る噴火口のようなこの穴は、ガラスを溶かす為の溶融炉。1300℃というとてつもない高温で20時間かけてじっくりと調合された原料を溶かしてゆく。

This is the furnace used to melt the compounded raw material which will be heated here for 20 hours in temperatures reaching 1300°C (2400°F).

STEP3 : 整形 / Formation

飴色に溶けたガラスを鉄製のシャベルで取り出す職人。冷めないうちに製管用の釜に入る形へ素早く整える。その腕前は熟練した職人だからこそ成せる技。

The molten glass is quickly taken out of the furnace and prepared for its next step, the stretching process.

STEP4 : 伸張 / Stretching

整えられたガラスを製管用の釜へ。下へ流れ落ちるガラスを、手作りの管引機で空気を吹き込みながらゆっくりと引っ張り、筒状へと伸ばしてゆく。

The still molten glass is carefully stretched and air is blown in during this process creating a hollow tube.

STEP5 : 冷却 / Cooling

工場内に立ちこめる煙と、異様なほどに長いレール。ガラスを急激に冷やさないようにレールには細かく砕かれた炭が敷かれている。職人の知恵とアイディアが垣間見れる

The stretched glass goes through a long cooling process in which it is placed on typo of charcoal. The charcoal enables a gradual shift in temperature preventing the glass to crack.

STEP6 : 切断 / Cutting

灰まみれのガラス管の束は、完全に冷めきると美しい色へと変化する。持ち運びしやすいよう1mほどの長さにカットされ、次の検品作業へ送り込まれる。

Brilliant color emerges after the cooling process. The glass is then cut to a length of one meter for easier handling.

STEP7 : 選別 / Sorting

ガラス管の太さを検品するのに使われる年季の入った選別管。白いペンキで書かれた数字はガラス管の外径を表し、この寸法を通ったものだけが次の行程へ進める。

The cut glass is placed through these tools to measure the length of the diameter and to check that the width is even throughout the whole length.

STEP8 : 倉庫 / Storage

検品されたガラス管は、色・サイズごとに整頓されラックに収納される。静謐なこの空間でガラス管は、 ビーズに切断されるまで保管される。

Tubes that have passed inspection will be stored until an order comes in to be cut and shaped into beads.

STEP9 : 形成 / Shaping

ようやく切断され形になったビーズ。７００℃の温度で切断面に丸みを与えるために再度溶かす。 炭粉がまぶされているのは中心の穴が塞がらないようにするため。

The cut glass is re-heated to the temperature of 700°C (1300°C) to round off the edges. Ash is applied in this process to prevent the hole from closing.

STEP10 : 完成 / Finishing

大きな洗浄釜で付着した炭粉を落とし、７００℃の電気炉で再加熱することにより表面の輝きが生まれる。手間ひまかけて出来上がった宝石のようなビーズ。それはまさに、職人たちの知恵と情熱の結晶だった。

The ash is washed away and the beads are heated one last time at 700°C to gloss the surface. Finally after all this care and process the beads are completed.
