hoboのものづくりにおける基本理念である"こだわり"を紹介してゆく『PHILOSOPHY』。 第2回目は、hoboがこれまでに数多くのアイテムの製作を依頼してきた ARAI TENT にフォーカス。 職人の魂が宿る町外れの小さな工場を訪ねた。
In the second part in this series we introduce ARAITENT which has produced a number of bags for hobo. We have come to visit their rural factory where the true spirit of craftsmanship lies.
大きな作業台の上に熟れた手つきで設計図を並べる。設計図には必要な情報がしっかりと書き込まれている。この型紙作成は出来栄えを大きく左右する重要な行程。
First the blueprints are carefully laid out on a large workdesk. All the information needed has been drafted on these blueprints. The final outcome is a result of the precise cutting of these paper patterns.
各パーツを裁断する準備として、重ねた生地の上に型紙を配し、その上から目印となる下穴を空ける。この作業には細いドリルを送り出すクローズドリルという専用の機械を使用する。
The pattern is placed on top of several layers of textile and small holes are drilled to mark locations where parts will be later added.
裁断機で手際よくパーツごとに切り分けてゆく。生地を幾重にも重ねて固定し裁断にかかるが、手作業のため一度に裁断できる枚数には限界がある。
The textile is then cut into parts using this cutting machine. Several layers of textile are placed on top of each other for the cut. This is done manually by hand, limiting the amount that can be processed at any one time.
縫製の工程に進むまで倉庫で保管される材料達。同社の製品やアウトドアギアが詰め込まれた倉庫の雰囲気は、まるで趣味仲間が集うガレージのようだ。
The cut material is placed in the ARAITENT storeroom (a space that fhas the familiar atmosphere of a friends garage) where it sits alongside other outdoor gear until the sewing process begins.
"カタカタ"とミシンの音だけがリズミカルに響く工房へ。この年季の入ったミシンは馬具専用のもの。革やテントなどの補強部分に使用する。用途ごとに数種類のミシンを使い分ける。
The rhythm produced by the sewing machine is the sole sound in this room. The old sewing machine, originally made for the production of horse saddles, is used for applying leather parts and heavy duty reinforcing of bags and tents. Other specialized sewing machines are used on different parts.
いよいよ縫製へ取りかかる。作業台に並べられた各パーツ。先程クローズドリルで開けた穴を目印にhoboのタグやレザーのパーツが置かれ、間違いのないように一針一針に心を込めて縫い込んでいく。
The sewing process begins. The parts are plaid on top of each other on the workdesk. Guided by the hole markings drilled earlier, the hobo badge and leather parts are placed in their correct position and prepared to be attached.
慣れた手付きでネームを縫い付ける。素早く、正確な作業のひとつひとつに、長年の経験で培われた職人の確かな技が光る。
The sewers' precise and rapid movements when sewing the badge on, demonstrates professionalism and years of experience.
黙々と縫製作業は続き、徐々に立体的なリュックの形が見えてくる。最後に縫い代に パイピングを挟み込み縫製が完了となる。いよいよ仕上げの行程へ。
Here, the sewer constructs the form of the backpack. The edges of each panel are locked together and we are on our way to the finished product.
縫製後、丹精込めて縫い上げたリュックをひっくり返し、生地のほつれや縫製の不備が無いかを確かめてゆく。製品に我が子を抱くような愛情が感じられる瞬間。
After the sewing is done the backpack is turned inside out and carefully checked for loose threads or flaws.
hoboのデザインと、ARAITENTの縫製技術が、ついに一つとなる。製品からは手作業ならではの特別な温もりが感じられる。伝統の製法と厳しい製品基準。ARAITENTのモノ作りは、まさに職人技だ。
The hand crafted bag has a special warmth that comes from the tradition and strict quality control evident throughout the manufacturing process. ARAITENT truly are masters of their craft.
