hoboのものづくりにおける基本理念である"こだわり"を紹介してゆく『PHILOSOPHY』。第3回目は想像力溢れるhoboアクセサリーの中でも、特にこだわり深い真鍮にフォーカス。素材の持つ表情や風合い、付属パーツの重量感、立体感が生まれる工程を体験するため大阪の工場を訪ねた。
Our third feature in this series will focus on the unique use of brass craftsmanship in hobo's line of accessories. To experience the feel of this unique and heavy material we visited this factory in Osaka to observe a key chain being produced.
材質であるロール状になった真鍮材。太さ、硬さや色によって膨大な種類がある中から、アイテムごとに最も適した物が選ばれる。
Raw brass is stored in bundled rolls. The rolls are divided by their thickness and hardness, each variety appropriate for the production of a different item.
真鍮材を特注の油圧式機械へ。この機械で成型できる型は1000種類以上。手作業で操作される機械によって、真鍮材がひとつひとつ成型されていく。
The raw material is placed in to the factory's original oil pressured brass press machine. This factory has over a thousand moulds to press the brass into unique shapes. The machine is manually operated creating a single piece at a time.
カットしたパーツを並べ、手作業でゆっくりと丁寧に溶接していく。
The pressed parts are lined up together and welded one by one by hand.
溶接したパーツをこちらも特注の研磨機械へ。洗濯機のドラムのような機械の中には、丸い小さな石が入っている。この石と真鍮がこすれ合うことで、溶接部の凹凸がゆっくりと削り取られてゆく。石での研磨が終わった後は、更に細かい木くずと真鍮をこすり合わせる工程へ。こうして贅沢な光沢感が生まれていく。
The parts are then placed into the factories original polisher, which resembles a washing machine with small stones placed inside. The barrel rotates, grinding the brass parts and smoothening rough edges left behind from the welding process. The stones are then replaced with woodchips and the process is repeated, this time resulting in a shiny polished appearance.
バレル磨きの終わったパーツは、チェーンとしてつなぎあわせるために１つ１つプレスされる。そこには美しいカーブが生まれる。
The polished parts are manually press bent one by one creating beautiful curved rings of a chain.
曲げられたパーツを、特殊なペンチを使ってチェーン状につなげてゆく。組み立ての後、必要な箇所に、再び手作業で溶接を施す。
The bent parts are put together with specially designed pliers. An S-shaped part is used to bring the hook and chain together. This again goes through a welding process.
hoboのブランドネームが刻印されるプレートは、3mm厚の真鍮板から作られる。カットし、専用のドリルでチェーンを通す穴をあげる。その後SCENE4と同様に研磨することで、角に滑らかさが生まれる。
A 3mm bar is cut and a hole is drilled through. The plate goes through the same process of polishing and the edges are smoothed out.
hoboのネームが刻まれた特製金型を機械にセットし、ゆっくり確実に型押ししてゆく。
Each hobo seal is carefully imprinted onto the plate.
メッキ仕上げは近隣の別工場にて行われる。大きな樽で1日かけてゆっくりと回転させながら、電極棒によってメッキをアクセサリーに付着させていく。
The finished items are taken to a nearby factory to be plated. Each item is placed into a big barrel, stirred and soaked in a solution with an electric current, in a process known as electroplating.
こうして、気の遠くなるような作業工程を経て、やっと一つのアクセサリーが誕生する。小さなアクセサリーのひとつひとつの部品にさえ、職人たちの魂は確かに宿っているのだ。
After this long process the final form is realized. The true craftsmanship necessary to produce this quality accessory is evident in each individual part.
